Still In Love With Touring
7 April

Westlife are back in Newcastle tonight and tomorrow. Entertainment Editor Gordon Barr chats to lead singer Shane

There are few acts who can claim to have played the Metro Radio Arena multiple times.

But Westlife can lay claim to the fact that come tomorrow they will have performed at the Newcastle venue on an incredible 25 occasions.

The Irish lads are at the Arena tonight and tomorrow as part of their Love Tour. "But it's not going to be all mushy stuff," laughs lead singer Shane Filan.

"I know a lot of people think that is all we do, but it isn't. That said, it is called The Love Tour, so the emphasis will be on ballads."

Shane can't wait to get back to Newcastle. "We opened our first ever tour in Newcastle. Our first show ever in front of an Arena crowd," he says. "I remember not being able to breathe. We were so nervous. But the atmosphere was electric.

"But I wasn't able to breathe and thought my voice had gone. I got through the first song, though, and then it was fine.

"To be honest, they scream so loudly in Newcastle that it probably wouldn't have mattered either way.

"I can honestly say the Geordie crowds are among the most up-for-it in the country. It is incredible that we have played there so many times and I'm hoping there will be many more."

That last comment may put paid to the rumours the band are about to split. "People have been saying that about us for the past five years," he laughs.

"But we're still here - albeit one less than we originally were. We're still enjoying ourselves and it has been an incredible journey for us.

"But it's a journey we intend to continue for the time being at least."

Westlife have performed a staggering 400 or so shows since 2001 and, despite being lambasted in some quarters, have gained numerous positive live reviews and a reputation as one of the best live vocal acts going. In addition they have sold in excess of 35 million CDs.

Brighton Ready For Westlife

Stopover Concert
3 March

IT'S a good bet the impossibly youthful-looking lads from Westlife won't be looking -- or feeling -- quite so wrinkle-free this morning.

The Irish quartet, who've sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, flew into Brisneyland yesterday ahead of their final Oz gig at that place in the swamp at Boondall. It was a case of second-time lucky for Kian, Nicky, Mark and Shane, who -- you remember -- were forced to cancel their first Oz tour back in September for unspecified reasons, although we're sure it had nothing to do with poor ticket sales.

This time round we understand the poor Westies would barely have had a chance for a post-concert bed down at their luxurious Hilton digs before catching an early am flight out of Brisbane enroute to South Africa.

Forget any visions of private jets, ala former boy bander Robbie Williams -- for these guys it's commercial all the way.

Fans: This Is The Life
17 November

By Zoe Watson

FIVE teenage girls have spent the last week camping out for front row seats to Westlife's next Northern Ireland tour.

The fans have given up their home comforts for damp tents and cold tea in the hope of getting the best seats for the April concerts, when tickets go on sale tomorrow.

Roisin Arnold, 16, and 17-yearold pal Ruth Hutchinson arrived outside the Odyssey Arena box office in Belfast last Saturday night.

Ruth said: "We came early because we wanted to get to the front of the queue, we wanted the best tickets. We do this every year because it's the only way to be in the first row and see Westlife up close.”

Friends Chantelle Pennington, 15, Emma Fearon, 19, and 14-yearold Ruth Gourley joined the queue on Wednesday.

Chantelle said: "We didn't think there would be anyone in front of us but Roisin and Ruth got in first. I think we'll still be guaranteed front-row seats.

"Some people think we're mad for sleeping out here in the freezing cold and don't realise what big fans we are."
