Westlife captivates Jakarta fans in Face to Face tour
16 September
The show was delayed for an hour but the crowd did not lose enthusiasm when Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Nicky Bryne and Shane Filan finally appeared during their Westlife Face to Face Asian Tour concert in Jakarta.
During the event on Sept. 12 at Senayan Tennis Indoor Stadium, Central Jakarta, the boy band, founded seven years ago, performed 17 songs, ranging from songs from their first album, Swear it Again to the newborn Face to Face, which was released in November 2005.
Indonesian Idol 2006 finalists Ihsan and Dirly appeared as guest singers during the opening of the concert.
Jakarta was the final destination in their Asian tour with previous stops in the Philippines, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The band and entourage were obviously not deterred by discouraging reports of terrorism, pollution and natural disasters from making a third visit to Indonesia after previous visits in 2000 and 2001.
"We are never reluctant to visit Indonesia. Amid the rumors, it is a great pleasure for us to contribute a day of happiness for our Indonesian fans," said Westlife.
Westlife put on a captivating show with a performance blended with energetic dances, to the fans' delight.
"After the experiences we've had since our first album, we are now wiser about performing," Westlife earlier had told a press conference.

Westlife is no less without Bryan McFadden, who decided to leave the band in 2004 for family reasons.
"His decision was a shock for us. But we took no offense. Now, Westlife is more closely knit. The solidarity is even stronger," said the boy band.
When Bryan announced his decision he said that he needed to devote more of his time to his family life with former Atomic Kitten member, Kerry Katona and their children.
Bryan then started a solo career, entering the charts at number one with his first solo single, Real To Me.
In Face to Face, Westlife gave second wind to some old songs--You Raise Me Up, Desperado (The Eagles), In This Life (Collin Raye) and When You Tell Me That You Love Me, a song produced in collaboration with Diana Ross.
"We are not recycling old songs in this new album. Nowadays, it is hard to find good songwriters. But if there are any good songs, we will not hesitate to accept them," said Westlife.
"It was a golden opportunity for us to collaborate with Diana Ross because she is a living legend. She was very energetic during the shooting of the music video, and that was really surprising," told the band.
Besides Diana Ross, Westlife has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry -- Mariah Carey, Donny Osmond, Lulu and Donna Summer.
To them, having the opportunity to collaborate with other singers, especially the seniors, is a blessing.
"There will be another collaboration with another singer, but it is still a secret. We will announce it soon," said Westlife.
Westlife has become more popular ever to fans, as shown by its strengthening position in the music industry.
The Jakarta concert, organized by Java Musikindo, attracted an audience of almost 3,000.
"The performance was amazing. But I was disappointed because the stage setting was not what most of us expected. It should have been better for a renowned band like Westlife," Silvia, a fan, told The Jakarta Post.
According to Silvia, with the high price of the tickets, fans had high expectations about the concert.
"Indonesian Idol's stage was better ... although the spectators paid nothing for the show," said Silvia, who said she had come to Westlife's previous two concerts.
However, she said that the venue chosen for this year's concert was much more comfortable compared with that for the first two, which were held at the Istora Senayan and Soemantri Brodjonegoro Sports Center.
"During the first concert in 2001 at Istora Senayan, many spectators fainted and it caused chaos that night. The place was too small, given the huge crowd," Silvia said.

Irish Group Westlife Promises to Return to Korea Next Year
8 September
By Cathy Rose A. Garcia
Staff Reporter
Encouraged by the warm reception from Korean fans, superstar Irish group Westlife promised they will be back for another concert next year.
Screams and cheers greeted Westlife members Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan when they finally appeared on stage at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium, southern Seoul, Wednesday evening. Wearing all-white outfits, Westlife opened the show with their hit song
'Flying Without Wings', followed by 'When You're Looking Like That', and 'Amazing'.
Westlife apologized to their fans for canceling their concert in 2004. "We're sorry for canceling our shows here in the past. For some reason, we weren't able to make it… But we're so happy to be here now. And we're planning to come and tour South Korea again next
year", Byrne said.
Their versions of 'Uptown Girl', 'Mandy', and 'Seasons In The Sun'' also impressed the crowd. Girls went crazy when Westlife showed off some sexy dance moves while performing Justin Timberlake's
'Senorita', Robert Palmer's 'Addicted To Love' and Pussy Cat Dolls' 'Don't Cha'.
The song that elicited the most cheers would have to be 'You Raise Me Up', which gained popularity in Korea during the World Cup.
During a press conference, Westlife thanked Korean fans who have supported them since their debut.

"Korea has been great for Westlife. We found it hard to go back to Korea and Asia because of our commitments in the U.K and Europe. Our record company didn't want us to go back, but we took a big stand to go back to Asia. We're delighted to be here
again", Egan said.
Westlife will release their next album, "The Love Album'' on November 6. Filan said they consider November as a
"lucky'' month, since all of their albums have been released during that month.
Egan said "The Love Album will feature some of the best-known love songs.
It's basically an album of some of the best love songs ever written. Some are well known and some are not. All are cover
versions", he said.
When asked why Westlife continues to release remakes of old songs, instead of writing their own music, Filan said they are
"singers, not songwriters."
"We want to have the best pop album out, and if that means remaking old songs or having songwriters write for us, we'd rather have the quality of the album than have songs that are 60 percent good. It's not fair to our fans. We want to maintain top quality songs,'' Filan said.
Westlife, who shot to stardom in 1999, had 13 number one singles in the U.K. charts and sold over 40 million albums around the world.

The Irish band's successes began in 1999 when their second single, "If I Let You Go," entered charts at top spot. "Flying Without Wings," in 2000, and "My Love," in 2003, were among many of their chart-topping hits over the years.

Westlife Face-To-Face With Their Fans Again
2 September
By Jules Quartly - STAFF REPORTER
Westlife will be reaching out to its many local fans at a concert next Sunday in Taipei.
Boy bands come and go but Westlife has stuck around and will make its fifth visit to Taiwan this month.
And, as if to prove the Irish lads are back by popular demand over 70 percent of the 3,000 plus tickets for their show on Sept. 10 sold out when they were released in July.
There was also a backlash against ticketing agents when uber-fans trying to book front-row seats at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) concert hall were told they were gone.
The ticketing system had broken down and outlets were besieged by phone calls from predominantly young women demanding better vantage points to cheer their heroes, the band’s record company Sony BMG Taiwan said.
This time around the Westlifers will be touching down in Taiwan as part of their extensive Asia tour, ostensibly to promote their seventh studio album Face to Face.
The album was released nearly a year ago and features guest vocals from Mariah Carey and Diana Ross. Over 20,000 units have been sold in Taiwan. A CD of hit singles called Amazing landed on the record stands in February.
The tour opens in Manila on Monday (Sept. 4) and will take in South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong before alighting in Taipei.
Tight scheduling means the band will fly in on the day of the performance and depart the next morning for Jakarta, before heading to Australia for four more dates.
The “Western City Boys”, as they are called in Chinese, were formed in 1998 and tasted success a year later with the single Swear it Again.
Since then there have been seven multi-platinum albums and almost 40 million albums sold worldwide. With 13 UK number one singles only Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Cliff Richard have been more successful in Britain.
Even former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is said to be a fan of Westlife and according to Sony he described them as chicken soup for the soul, or a relaxing spa experience.
The secret of their success seems to have been their ability to appeal to a mainstream audience that enjoys a strong melody, sweetly sung.
They do not pretend to be musical geniuses and song writing is mostly done for them. They hum along and look presentable.
It’s a simple formula and Westlife has worked hard to keep the momentum rolling, as five concerts in Taiwan would seem to suggest.
Originally a five-man band, Bryan McFadden left in 2004 to pursue a solo career, but Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Nicky Byrne have kept the flame burning.
Last year Feehily revealed he was gay but the front page tabloid news failed to dent sales. The rest of the boys are in their late 20s and have settled down.
It’s been eight years since Westlife first made a mark and its fans have been growing up with them. Westlife’s shelf life as a boy band has come and gone.
Unlike Take That, Boyzone or other similar boy bands, however, slickly choreographed dances and chest baring have never been their style. Instead they have become respected crooners. They even cover Frank Sinatra songs these days.
Moms and the occasional dad are just as likely to be part of the crowd next Sunday as the band keeps to the center lane in middle-of-the road music.

Grown-up Boy Band To Perform In Seoul Again
2 September
by Limb Jae-un <jbiz91@joongang.co.kr>
With its members' good looks and its romantic ballads, Irish band Westlife has earned a huge following around the world.
Westlife will perform in Korea at Jamsil Indoor Stadium next Wednesday. The concert is part of its "Face to Face" Asian Tour, named after the group's latest album of the same name. This will be Westlife's second visit to Korea.
Since its debut in 1998, Westlife has released a total of seven albums and 18 singles. The band has sold more than a million albums in Korea alone, and 35 million copies worldwide. Among the 18 singles it released, 13 captured the top spot on the U.K. singles chart.
The hit songs include "My Love," "Uptown Girl," "Angel," "Bob Bob Baby," "Seasons In The Sun," "Against All Odds," and "You Raise Me Up."
The band has been popular in Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and South America. Even British Prime Minister Tony Blair asked for autographs of the group for his daughter.
The group originally comprised five members ¡ª Shane Filan, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily and Bryan McFadden ¡ª but McFadden left the group in 2004 and released a solo album, changing the spelling of his first name back to the original Brian.
Though formed as a "boy band" seven years ago, the members now range in age from 27 to 29. Byrne and Filan are both married, Byrne to a daughter of the Irish prime minister and Filan to a cousin of Egan, and Feehily came out publicly as homosexual late last year. Egan is in a relationship with a former actress.
In an interview, Filan has said, "We became stronger and more mature. We are no longer a boy band and our music is different from what we used to play when we were a boy band."
Filan also said the group's fan base expanded as their fans got older and they have many female fans in their 30s and 40s. The majority of their fan base, however, is teenage girls.
For the concert, the band plans to sing songs that have been specially rearranged for the tour.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium, Olympic Park subway station, line No. 2 and 5, exit 7. Ticket prices range from 70,000 won ($72) to 90,000 won. The 90,000 won tickets are standing tickets near the stage.

East Meets Westlife!
2 September
It's a long way from the United Kingdom to the Far East, but then again, music knows no boundaries. That’s obviously true in the case of Westlife, arguably the UK’s biggest boy band and one of the most popular in the world.
Since being formed in 1998 by original members Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, Nicky Bryan McFadden, Westlife has gone on to become one of the biggest facts in all of pop music.
The group has had 13 UK No. 1 singles in seven years, the fourth highest in history, in the tradition of Rock ’n’ Roll King Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Cliff Richard. Westlife is also the only band in UK chart history to have entered straight at No. 1 with their first seven singles. They are also the only artists to win “Record of the Year” in the United Kingdom four times. The group has sold most 40 million albums worldwide and has even multiplatinum albums. Their hit songs—“Swear It Again,” “Queen of My Heart,” “If I Let You Go,” “Flying Without Wings,” their remakes of “Season in the Sun” and “Mandy,” and their latest single, “You Raise Me Up” from their Face to Face album (which both made it to the top spot, making it the first time for the band to hold both top album and single position in the United Kingdom in the same week)—have established them as one of the most successful musical groups in the world.
And they’ve kept themselves on that path, even after persistent rumors of a split and the departure of Bryan McFadden. In fact, less than a month after McFadden left, Westlife launched its fourth arena tour.
Now, Westlife is on the road again, but this time, they’ve set their sights on the Far East—the Philippines, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia for their Face-to-Face tour. The tour’s stop in Manila, which will be on September 4 at the Araneta Coliseum, is produced by Viva Concerts.
Face-to-Face in Manila is a reaffirmation of the close ties between Westlife and its Filipino fans. Then and now, the Far East has always held a special attraction for Westlife. Its fan base in this part of the world is extremely loyal, a fact that has translated into massive album sales and airplay. It will be remembered that when Westlife first visited Manila years ago, they were billeted at a certain five-star hotel. Their fans, mostly females, wanted to get up close and personal with the band that they went and booked themselves rooms in the hotel, just hoping to catch a glimpse of them in the elevator or on the premises. That’s how much Filipinos love Westlife. Their songs touch a chord that a lot of romantics can identify with—and for sure, those fans will flock in droves to the Araneta Coliseum when Westlife renews its ties with Manila.
Tickets for Westlife’s Manila concert are available at all SM Ticketnet outlets and the Araneta Coliseum Box Office. For details and reservations, call 911-5555.

Concert review - Faenol Festival
28 August 2006
The Irish lads took North Wales by storm! As the crowd waited for 9pm the wait was certainly worth it as Westlife gave us all a show to remember. The pyrotechnics and after-show fireworks (as good as they were) could not compete with the Westlife boys. Hit after hit they had the crowd in the palms of their hands from the first note!
Over 12,000 people turned up to unquestionably Faenol's biggest ever crowd. If you didn't have a ticket, then you missed out big time. Once again the rain threatened to dampen the show but it held out until the last two songs when. by then no one cared anyway!
Westlife gave us all what we wanted from 'Flying Without Wings' to Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl' The boys had hit after hit to chose from with 13 No1 singles!
A brilliant Michael Jackson medley including the trilby a white glove act had the crowd rocking in the aisles. It such a shame that security has to be so harsh on the night as the crowd just wanted to stand up and dance. A rethink has to be made to allow kids to dance and enjoy themselves.
Addicted to Love was well received with silhouettes of dancing girls shown on large red screens behind the lads.
Even Justin Timberlake fans were not left out as they were encouraged to join in with 'Senorita' and followed it up by Pussy Cats dolls 'Doncha' obviously with a slight variation of Doncha wish your boyfriend!!!!
Their Christmas No 1 Seasons in the Sun was enjoyed by all ages as we saw big men singing along, no doubt remembering the song first time round in the 70's?
Barry Manilow's Mandy was belted out to the delight of everyone
Mark was made fun of because of his dancing, he must have mis-stepped or something but I don't think anyone noticed until the rest of the lads pointed it out - poor Mark!
You can see pictures from the show here.

Review Twickenham
26 August 2006
By Craig Nelson
Cool customers: Westlife.
After nearly eight years together, six albums and 13 number one singles, no one - not even the band - could have predicted Westlife's extraordinary Indian summer.
Even by the group's own standards, it has been an amazing time to be Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily or Kian Egan.
Westlife's number looked to be up following Brian McFadden's departure, yet unlike Take That, Spice Girls and Boyzone before them, losing a member has strengthened their grip on the charts.
Face to Face, their latest album, went straight to number one last October and spawned a number one single, You Raise Me Up, and a critically acclaimed duet with Diana Ross, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, which reached number two.
A successful two-month arena tour of the UK followed in the spring and the Irish four-piece have spent the summer winding their way around the English countryside playing in country parks and festivals.
Marble Hill Hall will welcome them later this month as part of the Twickenham estate's summer festival, which begins on Saturday, August 12, with Jools Holland.
Despite the group's success, Nicky is just grateful to have an audience to play to.
"As Face to Face was the first pop record we'd done since Brian left, we knew it was a make or break album," said Nicky.
"If it didn't do it, we would have had to talk about what to do next but, luckily, those conversations didn't even need to be had.
"Every other band that has lost a member has disappeared afterwards so the fact it's worked out for us makes us very happy."
Kian agrees: "It was satisfying for us to prove everyone wrong, everyone who was always telling us it would never happen."
After getting such an overwhelming vote of confidence from their fans, the band set to work rehearsing for their tour and feel confident they have something special in store for their fans in Twickenham.
"I think it's quite different from what we've done before," Kian explains.
"The past couple of tours have had a similar sort of structure and we knew we wanted to change that and give people something new. We think we've done that.
"I think it will be slick, contemporary and a bit more sophisticated - we just hope the fans enjoy it."

Cover Story: Facing up to Westlife
25 August
Westlife’s nicky fesses up to the boy band way of life.
After a four months break, one of the biggest groups is back on the fast track to world –wide musical domination.
Westlife took a well deserved break from the limelight, after the success of their 2004 tribute cover album to Frank Sinatra, Allow Us To Be Frank, in which time Nicky, Kian, Shane and Mark took time out to rejuvenated their batteries.
It was their longest break since the boys self titled debut album in 1999 catapulted them to boy-band superstardom. The departure of member Bryan McFadden in 2004 didn’t dampen the remaining boys spirit in the slightest.
And after six multi-platinum albums in the UK, numerous Brit and MTV awards, 12 Number Ones and 35 million albums sold over their seven year career, they still insist that the four months break was too long.
“We had nearly four months off and it felt like three years,” laughs Nicky, “the break made us realise how much we wanted to start work again. At the end of it I couldn’t wait to get back into the studio.”
Their seventh album sees them teaming up once again with long term collaborator and friend, Steve Mac, and Swedish hit-makers The Location (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Nsync), to release their latest venture, Face To Face.
The album features the boys taking on three of the most popular tracks of all time.
The first single is their remake of Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up where they gave it an Irish feel by adding bagpipes to the track.
That was quickly followed by another heartbreaker and chart-maker, When You Tell Me That You Love Me, a duet with Diana Ross.
Their third single from Face To Face is an original song, Amazing, which sees the boys do what they do best: soppy, heart wrenching love ballads. Also included is their version of The Eagle’s Desperado.
Fans won’t be worried, because the rest of the album is full of original tracks, the sort that Westlife does best, with enough happy pop tunes and love songs to tickle everyone’s boy band fancy.
New tracks include That’s Where You Find Love, She’s Back, Colour My World, In This Life, Heart Without A Home, Hit You With The Real Thing, Change Your Mind and Maybe Tomorrow.
Recording for Face to Face was spread throughout Ireland, Sweden and London, but Westlife aren’t tired yet. They’re already in the midst of their world promo tour, with Malaysia being a possible new addition to their tour destinations… if Westlife member, Nicky has anything to do with it.
Buzz caught up with Westlife member Nicky, to find out what’s up with one of the most popular boy bands in the universe.
How’s the tour been so far?
Great, but tiring! It’s been a good time though, the crowd seems to really be enjoying themselves every time we play. It’s amazing for me to see that, Westlife’s been together for almost eight years now, and we’re still packing them in.
Where’ve you guys played?
So far, we’ve played the U.K, Ireland and South Africa. Our shows have an amazing feel when we play the open air at castles around England. We hit Asia soon and then we’ll be heading for Australia next.
Where would you say has the best audiences?
Well, since I’m Irish, I’ll have to say Ireland! Playing home is fantastic, the crowd go crazy. We’ve never played Australia though, so we’re looking forward to that.
How different would you say Asian fans are compared to western fans?
It’s been six years since we last played in Asia, so it’s been too long, we’re due for a return. But what I can remember about Asian fans is that they were a little more
polite when they meet you, but when they’re at the concert, they go crazy, they really do! They show that they’re enjoying themselves by singing along to the songs.
Over 30 million albums sold in your career with westlife – what does that mean to you?
Well, in a way it tells us that we’ve made it in the industry. But while saying that, we also have to remember that there’s no room for complacency. You’re only as good as your last album. There is always room for improvement. Perhaps when you’ve sold 60 million you can sit back a little and relax, but not now, there’s still so much more we can accomplish. But it is a proud feeling. It’s something we didn’t know we could achieve. But the fact that we’ve lasted this long, having overcome so many things like Brian leaving, and we continue to forge forward shows us we’ve got a lot more kick left. We’re not finished yet!
Would you guys ever look for a new member?
No, I don’t think we’ll ever have a new member. We’ve managed to sustain ourselves very happily as a four piece group. Besides, I’d much rather split finances four ways than five ways!
What would you do if this whole ride stopped tomorrow?
We just finished our six months break, so I think I’d take a year off if it all stopped tomorrow. I’d enjoy my life with my wife, my dog, and hopefully by that time, have a little family too. I’d like to stop and take a breath and think long and hard about what Westlife has achieved. Then I’d start all over and do something completely different like golf, because, lets face it, we’re never going to be as successful individually as we were with Westlife as a group. And I’ve always wanted to be the best, never mediocre. So I think I’d put that whole group thing aside and say that was then, and this is now.
Your last two albums have been predominantly covers, have you been stalling - when are you going to hit us with another original sure winner?
We have been very cover driven lately. But there are so many great old songs that are being remade, and that’s just where we are right now. As far as writing original stuff goes, Westlife has been lucky to have such success that we can’t afford to be mediocre anymore. We have to ensure that every track we come up with is a hit. There are lots of people out there willing us to fail, and even the media can be against you. But the fans, you can’t fool them.
In all your travels, which country do you think has the prettiest girls?
That’s a hard question! There are lots of pretty girls everywhere. But I think I’m going to have to go with Sweden. Yup, Sweden has the most pretty girls, I think.
Do you ever get sick of being called a boyband?
Not really. Our fan base isn’t just the young, though, anymore. We’ve won over a lot of the older fans with our cover tracks. The boyband stigma is always attached, but whether we’re a boyband, or boys in a band, it doesn’t bother us at all.
Tell us a bit about the upcoming asian tour?
Touring always is the best part of what we do. And as for our upcoming Asian tour, we have a couple of surprises in store. We’re going to get quite raunchy, so even if you’re not a Westlife fan, there’s something to enjoy!
it looks like malaysia’s not on your tour itinerary …
Really? Are you sure? That seems strange. I know we have a really big fan base there. We’ll speak to our agent and get that changed.
We’ll keep you to your word …
I’m sure we’ll be seeing you guys down in Malaysia soon!
Face to Face is currently available under Sony BMG, from all leading record store.
A quickie with Nicky
Best thing about being a Westlife member?
Travelling the world.
I feel sexiest when…
I’m naked!
I’m happiest when…
I’m naked with my wife!
Pussycat Dolls or Hillary Duff?
Pussycat Dolls, because there’s six of them.
Life is about….
Enjoying it, not stressing, believing and living your dreams.

Westlife to perform in Taiwan again
17 August
After half a year, Westlife is returning to Taiwan once again for their September 10 concert at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC).
Their stop in Taiwan will be part of their Asia tour, which includes shows in the Philippines, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia.
September will be Westlife's fifth time in Taiwan, this time promoting their latest album "Face to Face."
In 2005, the band's cover of the Secret Garden song "You Raise Me Up" hit number one in the UK charts, simultaneously with the album it came from, "Face to Face." It was the first time the band ever held top album and single in the same week.
The Irish sensation's success started in August 1999 when their second single, "If I Let You Go," entered the charts at number one. "Flying Without Wings," in 2000, and "My Love," in 2003, were among many of their chart-topping hits throughout the years.
With seven multi-platinum albums, Westlife has sold nearly 40 million albums worldwide. Their achievements in the music industry arena have been nothing less than remarkable. Between 1999 and 2005, the band has had 13 UK number one singles and is the only group in UK chart history to have had their first seven singles go straight to number one.
Their number ones singles total ranks fourth-highest in the UK, behind music history-making artists Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Cliff Richard.
Even heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson is a fan of Westlife music, which he described as chicken soup for the soul or a relaxing spa experience.
"Face to Face" has sold 20,000 albums in Taiwan since its release last year.

Westlife and Status Quo concerts mean no parking at Pendennis
17 August
Falmouth locals will not be able to park at Pendennis Point because of two high-profile concerts taking place at Pendennis Castle, later this month.
Over 6000 fans are expected to descend on the normally-sleepy Cornish town on on 26 and 27 August for two sold-out concerts by Irish boy band Westlife and rock legends Status Quo.
Parking for motorists and residents will be banned on Pendennis Point for the duration of the bank holiday weekend, which has worried some local businesses.
But Police said the ban was needed for safety.
Emma Fox, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Having an extra 6,000 people on a bank holiday in Falmouth has the potential to cause major disruption.
“It can be very congested on the best of days at the point and extra cars trying to park in the vicinity is just unworkable.
“The restrictions are necessary for health and safety, and for park-and-ride schemes set up by concert organizers to function effectively.”

Fireworks at Faenol
12 August
Opening this year's Faenol Festival will be the superstar Irish band Westlife - who also happen to be playing at Chester Racecourse next weekend.
This band burst on the UK mainstream music scene seven years ago - at about the same time as the Faenol Festival was launched.
They have dominated the UK pop scene ever since and the success of their latest album Face to Face shows that they're still at the top of their game.
The new album features all the hallmarks of that reign - a collection of classic songs and future standards. In brief, Face To Face finds Westlife doing what they've always done best. Also appearing at the Faenol Festival, near Bangor, this year will be Bryn Terfel and special guests (Saturday, August 26), Shirley Bassey (Sunday, August 27), and Tan y Ddraig (Monday, August 28).
Joining Bryn Terfel on stage at this year's opera gala will be soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Rolando Villazón.
Since her international debut at Covent Garden in 1992, Gheorghiu's magnificent voice and dazzling stage presence have established her as a unique international talent.
Mexican-born Villazón, fresh from debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Covent Garden has been hailed as the new tenor superstar and judging by the success of his first solo recording and current critical acclaim, this may well be an understatement.
* Westlife kick off the Faenol Festival on Friday, August 25, with gates opening at 5.30pm and the show starting at 8pm. Each evening culminates in a firework display.
Tickets for the opening night are £36 seated, £28 grass.
A 10% discount is available for bookings of 10 or more and a weekend festival promenade ticket is available for just £80 (plus booking fee). Tickets from North Wales Theatre 01492 872000, Theatr Gwynedd 01248 351708.
* Meanwhile, don't forget to book tickets to see Westlife and Van Morrison at Chester Racecourse next weekend by ringing 0870 145 1100.

Audience go wild for Westlife
4 August
WESTLIFE have been so successful within the boyband brand that it would have been understandable if they'd trotted out all the old ballads to the Audley End crowd on Sunday.
However, the 8,000 strong audience - teeming with screaming little girls and grannies - was treated to a smattering of fun covers of some very unexpected pop hits. That's not to say that the masses didn't get the likes of Flying without Wings, with Shane, Mark, Nicky and Kian resplendent in their gleaming white suits.
After countless number ones and numerous tours, the Irish quartet have honed their stage act into a well-oiled machine. There were gasps as pyrotechnics lit up the stage and surprise as eternal backgrounders Nicky and Kian belted out solos instead of simply joining in the chorus.
Most impressive of all were the covers, which were actually pulled off with aplomb - despite being a seismic shift from the usual boyband fare. Even the diehards in the crowd - swooning to every gyration in their Westlife T-shirts - could not have foreseen versions of The Pussycat Doll's Don't Cha, Will Smith's Wild Wild West as well as classics Billie Jean and Addicted to Love.
There were costume changes galore from suits to jeans and hoodies to hats and single sparkly gloves for Billie Jean. The clothing reflected the tempo of the songs as they moved from the slower Mandy and Seasons in the Sun to more up tempo hits like When You're Looking Like That. The clothing almost came off completely in one mock striptease moment which threatened to overheat several pacemakers among the screaming throng.
The band's recent foray into Sinatra-style crooning was also in evidence with a swing version of Uptown Girl, complete with top hats and canes.
They left they stage to booming calls for an encore and who were they to decline? The four superstars from Ireland returned for three more songs and a spectacular 10-minute firework display. It was a fitting end to a polished couple of hours' entertainment.

Get ready to scream as Westlife take stage
21 July
THE historic grounds of Audley End House will become a sea of screaming pop fans when Westlife, the kings of the boy bands, take to the stage for an open air concert on July 30.
Kian, one quarter of the heartthrob line-up, spoke to the Observer from the Westlife tour bus and said audiences could expect all the hits and more at the show.
"It's a very energetic, very up-tempo set. All the Westlife hits will be in there, along with some others thrown in. Anyone who enjoys pop concerts will enjoy this," he said.
He did not want to give everything away, but said the show would feature a medley of covers, including, intriguingly, a version of The Pussycat Dolls' Don't Cha.
Over the course of their career Westlife have chalked up 34 million album sales and 12 number one hits and Kian said the band had no plans to call it a day yet.
"It's very rewarding - getting on stage every night and having thousands screaming at you and I still get very excited hearing great songs. This is our job, this is what we do," he said.
The band are already working on a new, as yet untitled, album set for release in November and look set to follow that with a Greatest Hits Part II] package next year.
Kian said fans could expect the same mixture of ballads and pop songs that has served the band so well in the past.
The solitary rocky patch during the band's seven years together came in 2004 with the departure of Bryan McFadden, who left to pursue a solo career. Kian said none of the remaining boys had any plans to follow suit.
Westlife sit comfortably in the boy band tradition alongside the likes of Take That, Boyzone and The Backstreet Boys and that is where Kian is happy.
Asked if he was ever tempted to record something radical the answer was a resounding, "No!"
"We are what we are. To do something completely different for us would be suicide. Why would we ever want to do that? We do what we do for ourselves and for the fans," he said.
The Westlife show is part of the Music on a Summer Evening series of concerts that kicks of on Saturday with Simple Minds and also includes concerts later in the summer from The Bootleg Beatles, Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and the traditional last night of the Audley End proms.

Westlife, Summer Pops Liverpool
18 July
THOSE nice boys from Westlife weren't doing much to dirty their squeaky-clean image as they took over the Summer Pops last night.
The quartet had spent the day in Knowsley Safari Park being given a tour by the Earl of Derby.
At the end of the show they thanked their hosts, roadies and even security guards for keeping the crowd safe.
But their polite behaviour hadn't cooled the adoring crowd. When the boys turned up the heat in the already scorching tent it seemed as though the all-woman audience would explode.
They ended a Michael Jackson-inspired dance routine by throwing their hats to the floor, peeling off their gloves finger by finger and starting to undo their trousers.
But they weren't ready to go the full Monty in front of the mums and grans.
Instead the performers coyly wagged their fingers at the crowd and grinned over their shoulders.

The boys played it safe, but their slickly impressive show crammed with cover songs didn't disappoint anyone. Old favourites got a rapturous applause and the audience was word-perfect on Westlife's latest album Face To Face.
A pyrotechnic display and lots of costume changes livened up the performances, with Up Town Girl getting a top hat and tails makeover.
Atongue-in-cheek version of the Pussycat Dolls Don't Cha had the crowd ready to dump the few men around.
The boys looked as though they were loving every minute of playing in front of the enthusiastic audience, with Nicky smiling and twinkling at the crowd and Kian whipping them into a frenzy.
When they played Mandy the crowd erupted and joyfully held their mobiles in the air for You Raise Me Up.
When Shane said Liverpool crowds were the best "and we're not just saying that" you could see why.

Westlife Liverpool Summer Pops
18 July
SEVEN years after being handpicked for stardom by pop guru Louis Walsh and fashioned by Ronan Keating, Westlife should be in the autumn of their careers.
Thirteen UK number one singles, 40m album sales around the world, sellout tours wherever they go (including Australia and Asia in September), two Brits Awards, the list goes on.
Time to gracefully retire and enjoy their fortunes, some may think? Perhaps buy a slice of Sligo and run a stud farm?
Well, not based on the success of their Summer Pops gig which saw the Big Top in danger of bursting at its seams with the shrieks and yelps from the group’s army of mainly teenage fans.
Twenty-four hours after 1980s boy band A-Ha gyrated their 40-something hips in front 30-something mums it was again Ladies Night on the Dock Road, this time courtesy of Ireland’s Fab Four.
A full five minutes of ear-piercing screams announced their imminent arrival on stage before they launched straight into what was arguably their showstopper, Flying Without Wings.
Dazzling fireworks accompanied their opening numbers while four huge videoscreen backdrops gave everyone close-ups of their favourite band member.
The show was everything the fans could have hoped for.
They were even treated to a flash of Nicky Byrne’s boxer shorts emblazoned with MUFC - a bold move by anyone in Liverpool.

Westlife’s success is based on looking good, strutting a fair dance routine and having passable singing voices.
A dollop of Irish charm and twinkly eyes have also helped make them darlings of the media and ultimate teeny pop idols.
Since Bryan McFadden’s departure in 2004 Westlife have re-invented themselves, maturing into a more refined and classy product, helped by a few smoochy Rat Pack tunes and rubbing shoulders with Diana Ross, Lulu, Mariah Carey and Donny Osmond.
They are enjoying a second coming. What price another seven years? After which they can split up in time for a reunion tour and yet more screams, the likes of which have not been heard round here for 40 years.

Westlife go on a stately safari
18 July
WESTLIFE chose an unlikely venue to spend a day relaxing before their sell-out concert at the Summer Pops.
Instead of visiting the Albert Dock's bars or enjoying a shopping trip on Mathew Street, they spent the day with an earl at his stately home.
The Irish boy band lunched with the Earl of Derby at Knowsley Hall before getting a tour of his safari park.
The five-piece band arrived at the hall in time for a buffet lunch with the earl.
They then went swimming in Knowsley Hall's pool, and relaxed on the lawns, touring the grounds and playing Frisbee.
In the afternoon, Knowsley Safari Park manager David Ross gave them a VIP tour in his car, where they saw the 120-strong troupe of baboons and the rest of the park's animals.
The group left around 5pm to begin preparation for their show.

For China's young, boy band beats state drama
18 July
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Xiao Weixin didn't make it to Westlife's debut concert in China, but not for lack of trying. Shanghai Grand Stage, the flashy modern auditorium where the concert took place in June, holds 8,000 to 10,000, and ticket prices ranged from 150 yuan (10 pounds) to 1,580 yuan (107 pounds).
Two days before the Irish boy-band's show, almost every ticket was gone.
"I tried to get tickets online the day before but they were all sold out. I was prepared to pay 400 yuan for a ticket," said Xiao, 21, a student at Shanghai Normal University.
Boy bands, with their soft-pop love-ballads and clean-cut image, have been a major hit among China's young.
Few pastimes are more popular among well-heeled urban youth than karaoke, and boy bands such as Westlife and Boyzone, or more local counterparts such as Taiwan's Mayday, are standard fare.
"Take me to your heart", a dulcet love-ballad most recently covered by Denmark's "Michael learns to Rock", is played in shops, restaurants, malls, elevators and even buses in China, so much so that locals all know the tune.
According to one Beijing newspaper, Westlife has a China fan club numbering more than 50,000. The band's latest album, "Face to Face", released in 2005, sold more than 10,000 legal copies in China, the report said.
That doesn't include pirates, which dominate China's music market.
"Most of my friends and colleagues like Western pop music as we appreciate their sense of taste," said Samuel Zhu, a recent graduate of Shanghai's elite Fudan University.
Traditional Chinese music is very out-dated and I find most of the lyrics rather immature and stupid," said Zhu.
Just 20 minutes away by car from the Westlife venue is the city's classic Shanghai Majestic Theatre, which seats 1,328, and where, two evenings before, the story of the Chinese Communist Party's early history was being acted out.
Taken from a 1930s account by U.S. journalist Edgar Snow, the play is set in Yan'an, a remote mountainous area where the early Chinese Communists hid from both the Japanese and the Kuomintang (Nationalist) forces, who later fled defeated to Taiwan.
Yet, though it was based on a key element of Chinese Communist folklore, few students knew anything about it.
"A play about Edgar Snow? I've never heard of it, or heard anyone talking about it at my university. I don't think many people would be interested in going," said Xiao.
"None of my friends and I have heard of the Edgar Snow play," said Fudan's Zhu.
"To be frank, I find it a bit weird that I am more familiar with ancient Chinese history than with what happened to our country during the last century," said Zhu.

NICKY'S BLOWN HOPES OF BAGPIPE FINALE AT CASTLE
18 July
Edited By Billy Sloan And Mickey Mcmonagle
WESTLIFE have scrapped plans to play the bagpipes at Edinburgh Castle on Friday.
Group member Nicky Byrne admits he wrestled with his pipes - gifted to him by the SECC - but couldn't squeeze a tune out of them.
"I had a month off and made a real effort to play the pipes but none of us could master them," said Nicky.
"But we can't wait to play Edinburgh Castle. We've done gigs in castles and stately homes across England but none compare to Edinburgh.
"We first played there in 2004 and to perform with such a spectacular backdrop - in the heart of a capital city - was an amazing experience." Nicky has slipped us three pairs of tickets for the show to give away. For the chance to win just complete the title of this Westlife No. 1 hit: Flying Without *****.

It was the turn of cheeky Irish boy band Westlife, the four-piece with 13 number ones to their name.
And even before they went on stage, they had put smiles on the faces of several local women.
Sue Barnett, from Hilperton, had paid £905 to watch and meet the band through an eBay auction to raise money for Forever Friends.
She and friend Jean Hillman spoke to the band for around five minutes, getting them to sign autographs for friends and family as well.
After meeting the band, Ms Barnett said: "That was worth every penny, especially because it is going to such a good cause.
"People have been saying I am stupid to pay so much, but the guys were so nice and we have had a great day."
The eBay auction was organised by cancer patient and long-time RUH supporter Vanessa Kyte, who lives in Rudge.
And despite undergoing surgery just 12 days before the concert, she also got to meet the band with sister-in-law Nicola Noble.
"I was very surprised at how mature they were," she said.
There was also a surprise for another RUH cancer patient, 25-year-old Jo Woods, who lives in Westbury.
Her mum Kay Collett works for the security company monitoring the Rec gigs, Trowbridge- based Safe and Sound, and they had arranged for Jo to meet the band before they went on stage.
Mrs Collett said: "We just told her we had got her tickets to the concert - so she was really surprised when we told her she was going to meet Westlife as well. But they were really great with us."
When they got on stage, the crowd who had paid £40 a head to see Westlife were not disappointed either.
They shouted and screeched as the band sang some of their chart-toppers - including Uptown Girl and Mandy - as well as covers of songs by performers as diverse as the Pussycat Dolls, Robert Palmer and Justin Timberlake.
Fans were again treated to numerous costume changes, with the band starting in white suits before moving into something more casual as their set progressed.
It all seemed to delight the massed crowd and they all went home smiling at the end of the evening.

Concert review - Coopers Field, Cardiff
14 July 2006
Slick, effortless and entertaining best sum up the Westlife concert in Cardiff's Coopers Field last night.
They've got the chat, the moves and the voices which their devoted fans loved from start to finish.
It was the fourth time the Irish boyband have played the capital this year having already done a three-night stint in Cardiff International Arena in May, but there was no lack of enthusiasm or effort from the boys.
There were some empty seats in the audience so perhaps some fans had spent and seen enough, but those that did go were treated to a polished performance
Any danger of lacking stage presence - a criticism last time round - simply didn't exist and while they opened with Flying Without Wings and ended more than an hour later with You Raise Me Up, there was plenty in between to smile about.
Mid-way through they did a number of covers, singing Billy Joel's Uptown Girl, Will Smith's Wild Wild West, Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love and camped things up with, perhaps the best of all, Don't Cha by the Pussycat Dolls.
Despite generous offers from the crowd to stay the night in Cardiff, Nicky, Kian, Shane and Mark left Wales for London, but promised to return in 2007 to promote their new album, released later this year.

WESTLIFE WARM 'EM UP
13 JulyCrowds at Chatsworth House huddled under blankets to keep warm during a cold, damp evening, but their heroes Westlife soon warmed them up.
Ireland's biggest-selling boy band, Shane, Nicky, Kian and Mark, had the crowd on their feet with hits including When You're Looking Like That and Amazing.
In white suits for Flying Without Wings, the opening number on their Face to Face tour, Westlife went through several costume changes. A personal highlight was a medley of pop hits including Billie Jean, Uptown Girl, Addicted to Love and a cheeky take on the Pussycat Dolls' number one Don'tcha.
Westlife proved they can move, with slick and impressive dance routines throughout, including a spot of moon-walking during Billie Jean.
Concert-goers, clutching hot chocolate, soon forgot the miserable weather when Westlife sang their number one When You Tell Me that You Love Me, complete with video screens featuring Motown legend Diana Ross.
Barry Manilow's Mandy, which was another number one for Westlife before their split from Brian McFadden, was the final scheduled song of the night.
Then came the encores with fireworks lighting up the sky. The boys came back on stage to perform Queen of My Heart and You Raise Me Up, ending a brilliant night's entertainment.
Laura Ashton, from Allestree, who was at the concert with friend Kelly Detledge and Becky Dawson, said: "It was fantastic and the atmosphere was great."

Divas try Westlife
7 JulyTHE stage is set for a showdown of the sexes when girl group the Young Divas hit the road with UK boy band Westlife on their Australian tour in September.
Although they burst on to the charts just three months ago, it's a case of power in numbers for the quartet of former Australian idol-ettes, who are notching up gigs quicker than Mark Holden could score them a touchdown.
With their first single already reaching gold sales, and their inaugural tour set to shimmy into the national spotlight from July 14 at Star City, it was their upcoming shows with the boys from Westlife which the girls described as "a dream come true" yesterday.
"It's just amazing to have the opportunity to perform with international artists of that standard," original Idol graduate Paulini said.
"The shows will hopefully also give us exposure overseas."

Sisters set up eBay Westlife auction for scanner funds
1 July
By Helen Thomas
FANS of boy band Westlife have been given the chance to bid to meet their idols while raising money for charity.
Sisters Nicola Noble, 44, of Warminster, and Vanessa Kyte, 41, of Rudge, have organised an auction on eBay to raise money for the Forever Friends Appeal, which aims to generate £800,000 for a new CT scanner for the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
It is the latest in a long line of fundraising events organised by the sisters since Mrs Kyte was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.
Last year she was diagnosed with secondary brain tumours spurring her sister to create fundraising operation Pink Positive.
continued...
Their last fundraising event was an 85-mile week-long walk around the RUH catchment area, which raised £25,000 for the appeal.
Mrs Noble said: "Vanessa and I sit down and throw some ideas around for fundraising things. We knew Forever Friends had arranged a Westlife concert and thought they'd appeal to our generation.
"We talked about it and came up with the idea of a meet and greet with them. "The organisers Live Nation spoke to them and they came up trumps so two lucky people will get to meet Westlife before the show. "We both enjoy their music and as we were finishing the 85-mile walk in Bath their song You Raise Me Up was playing which is very apt."
Mrs Kyte is due to go back into hospital next week for surgery on two brain tumours. She has also recently found out she has another tumour in her throat. Mrs Noble said: "She is as positive as always and is fighting back and will be at the concert in July. It's all about making a negative into a positive, which we are determined to do. She has so much zest for life."
The concert will be held on July 16 at The Rec, in Bath, as part of a series of Summer Nights Open Air charity concerts. Mrs Kyte said: "I would like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to Westlife, their management and concert organisers, Live Nation, for making this amazing experience and fantastic fundraising opportunity possible, in support of such a worthwhile cause."
Other performances to raise money for the appeal will include Elaine Page and Michael Ball on July 15 while Simply Red will perform on July 14 to raise money for Dorothy House.
Tickets for the concerts are available on (0870) 4000688 or at www.summernightsonline.co.uk
To bid in the Westlife auction visit www.eBay.co.uk by July 7 and enter item number 320000628618 into the search engine.

After winning over more Australian hearts during a promotional tour earlier this year, which sent their seventh album Face To Face straight to number 1, Michael Coppel and Video Hits are very pleased to announce the return of Westlife for a national arena tour this September!
Arguably the most successful pop group to come out of Ireland, Westlife have achieved worldwide album sales in excess of 35 million, and won a multitude of accolades, including two Brit Awards.
Since the release of their 1999 debut single Swear It Again, Westlife have reached the top of the UK singles chart an incredible 13 times, and their five sell out UK Arena tours have seen them performing to a combined audience of over 4 million, making them the biggest selling arena act in the UK.
In reaching number 1 Westlife's current album Face To Face knocked Robbie Williams out of the #1 spot in the UK and also reached the top of the Australian ARIA charts, where it has been a top 10 staple and is approaching double platinum sales.
Following the success of their first single You Raise Me Up, SonyBMG will release Westlife’s second single, Amazing, on July 15.
Joining the 4 lovely Irish lads of Westlife on tour are 4 of Australia's finest femme vocalists in the guise of YOUNG DIVAS.

Nicky's Post-Tour Interview
2 JuneSo how was the tour for you?
It went really well actually. We’ve had the best reports back from everybody; family, friends, critics. This year we really sat down before we even planned this tour and made sure we were streets ahead of last year. We really stepped up our game and it’s worked really well.
hich were your favourite dates?
It would be hard to pick. In Belfast they’re really crazy, but Dublin is my hometown and the gig is only 15-20 minutes away from my house, and that’s always really cool. Glasgow was always amazing and Manchester was cool too, but they’ve all been brilliant.
What was your favourite song to perform?
The medley section was my favourite part by far. There were a couple of songs in there that we completely stripped down and changed and the choreography was quite raunchy. The crowd seemed to love the choice of songs this year and the feedback is absolutely incredible.
Have you seen any good banners?
There seem to have been a lot less banners this year, but there have been a lot of really young kids who wouldn’t have even been alive when Westlife started. They’re probably a bit young to be making banners, but the older people have swung bras and knickers at us. Kian tries them on at the end of every night.
How do you unwind?
I’ll just go home and take a bath and go to bed, or sometimes we have a few beers in the bar, nothing too mad. But if we’re all around in Dublin, for example, then we have a big party with our friends and family. Ireland is always about trying to catch up with people because you spend so much time out of the country, and over in the UK, we all had our own thing going on with our families.
What have you got planned now the arena shows have finished?
We’ve got a lot of outdoor gigs to do and we’re obviously trying to plan a holiday as well. I’m in current talks with an Irish movie director to shoot a movie this summer. It won’t take up any Westlife time because I’m going to do it over the holidays. I’m not going to give too much away as it’s not 100% happening, but if I can squeeze it in I’ll do it. But I’ll try and have a decent holiday abroad, definitely, and we’ve got to record the new album. The new songs are coming in thick and fast at the moment.
What have been your highlights over the last few months?
Really just the success of the album. I mean, ‘You raise Me Up’ has turned into an anthem amongst our fans, it gets such an emotional response at our shows. It broke new markets for us, it was number one in Australia for four weeks, which is fantastic. We’re just happy boys. The relationship between us and our label is good so we’re buzzing!

Acute enteritis delays Westlife's concert
2 June
Michelle Zhang
WESTILFE is postponing their Shanghai concert on June 3 because one of the band members, Nicky Byrne, caught acute enteritis and his doctor suggested that he postpone the long haul flight until June 9.
The new concert date has not yet been confirmed. The local organizer, CPPA Entertainment Ltd, said the concert will most likely be held on June 25.
So far, more than 60 percent of the tickets for the June 3 concert have been sold. The organizer said these tickets can still be used for the postponed concert. However, ticket refunds are available at East Asia Ticket Gate 6, Shanghai Stadium, 666 Tianyaoqiao Road, before June 3.
Westlife was supposed to arrive in Shanghai on May 23. They planned to visit other parts of the country including Henan, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to record a documentary before the concert.
The organizer said the documentary recording schedule will also be postponed.
The Shanghai performance is the Irish boy band's only concert stop in China on their world tour this year. Westlife is one of the most popular foreign musical acts among Chinese audiences.

Mark's On-Tour Interview
19 May
So how’s the tour been?
It’s been fantastic. It’s been the most enjoyable tour on a personal level and it’s the best tour we’ve ever done in terms of the content and design of the show. I’m just so pleased to be in this situation, in terms of the band’s career. We’re still here, still doing new stuff, still being creative. We’ve always tried to make our shows totally different from our albums, and deliver the songs in a different way to how the fans know them.
Which has been your favourite date so far?
It’s difficult to say, they’ve all been amazing, but what makes a gig extra special is the acoustics of the venue. The show that stands out for me is the Saturday night that we played in Manchester. Nobody can imagine the sheer size of the arena. I also had a particularly great gig there, I was on top form!
Which is your favourite song to perform?
There’s so many I enjoy performing, but I think it’s ‘Colour My World’. It’s a bit more soulful, I can let rip vocally a bit more. I also love the opening part of it.
Have there been any funny moments on tour yet?
Every night someone makes some kind of mistake, but generally the fans won’t notice. Normally if I notice someone making a mistake then I’ll start laughing, then they’ll start laughing, and sometimes the laughter gets infectious and everyone starts laughing and no-one’s singing. I’m always trying to make Shane laugh when he’s singing the really serious parts of the songs. I’ve succeeded on quite a few occasions.
Have you seen any good banners this year?
A few. They normally turn the names of our songs into puns or whatever. But I want to see more crazy banners, or rude banners!
How do you unwind after the shows?
On most shows when you come offstage, you’re just so buzzed up and then all of a sudden you’re offstage in your hotel room. It’s very difficult to say ‘right then’ and order a cup of hot chocolate and go to bed. I usually won’t go to bed before two or three o’clock unless I’m really tired. I just stay up chatting to Kevin or a friend who’s over, maybe go for drinks with them. I’m a bit of a nocturnal person anyway, so I sleep in ‘till twelve or one.
What have you got planned for when the live shows finish?
Probably about five hours off then we’re straight back into recording the next album! I’d love a month or two off, but at the end of the day that’s life, especially as things are going so well at the moment. We can’t afford to take time out and just chill.
What’s been the highlight over the past six months?
There was one trip where we went to Sydney and Melbourne and I had a lot of fun. I love photography and I just went around taking photos of random things. We were there for one week and at the start no-one knew us and at the end the single went in at number 1 and we literally broke Australia. It was just a really good trip and we had family and friends with us and all of that. Australia’s a great place and we went to the Mardi Gras, which was brilliant. It was just a big laugh, you know.
Any message for your fans?
Only that if we’d sold only a handful of tickets, our label would be like, ‘OK, what’s going on with Westlife?’ but it’s done the opposite, the fans have been amazing, and the reaction to the shows was incredible, so I just want to say thank you very much for letting us stay here and sticking with us. By supporting the album and supporting the tour they’re helping to keep us successful, so thanks a billion for staying with us and we hope with this tour we’ve delivered something that they’ve really enjoyed.

A concert warning for Westlife fans around the world
17 May
WE ARE the two biggest Westlife fans in the world (especially Shane and Mark).
We are two girls from Denmark, who just bought two tickets for the Westlife concert in Lincoln, England. And, of course we are looking forward to it because we have been to a concert every year since 2000.
But we have just found out that it is not just a concert with just Westlife, but with four different groups as well.
Westlife will be there, but only for a few songs.
When you go onto the internet and look for the concert - it says Westlife 2006.
It does not say that Westlife are only going to be there for a few songs.
We do not think that it is fair on any Westlife fans who are misled into thinking that they’re going to an entire Westlife concert as normal.
This is not fair on the fans.

Concert review - Cardiff International Arena
14 May 2006
Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo
WESTLIFE weren't able to raise the roof in Cardiff last night. They opened on a high at Cardiff International Arena, coming down from the roof singing Flying Without Wings.
But Westlife were never really able to quite lift themselves in a show which promised so much, starting with fireworks and terrific special effects, but failed to deliver.
They had minor problems with sound settings, lead singer Shane Filan forgot his words during a solo spot and the group simply lacked stage presence.
Backing tracks were used during songs they have recorded with Mariah Carey and Diana Ross and it didn't seem right. Perhaps they should have found a live singer to stand in for the two stars.
But when it came down to singing, the boys can still deliver. Their latest song, Amazing, went down well and they finished with You Raise Me Up.
Westlife went away from their own songs for a few minutes in mid-concert, signing Will Smith's Wild Wild West and Don't Cha by the Pussycat Dolls. That section plus their Michael Jackson dance routine just didn't seem to fit comfortably.
But the Westlife fans loved it and the boys are in Cardiff for another two dates - tonight and Wednesday before heading off to Wembley Arena.

Shane's on-tour interview
12 May
So how’s the tour going so far?
So far, so good! In the week before it started we were getting a bit nervous because we were wondering whether we’d have it ready or not. It’s a much more energetic show this year. The routines are more difficult and a bit harder to learn. We’re really pushing ourselves and working a lot harder on the actual production of the show. The first night was probably the best first night we ever did. If there’s a bad rehearsal, it’s always a good show!
What happened in rehearsal?
Things were just going wrong, technical stuff, and we were missing the beat here and there. But you’ve just got to make sure you get it as best you can. But on the night it was great, the Belfast crowd were fantastic.
What’s been our favourite song to perform this year?
‘You Raise Me Up’, without a doubt. We recorded that song and always wondered what it would be like on tour, how the crowd would react and whether you could hear a pin drop or whether the crowd would sing along, but they’ve actually sung along louder than I’ve ever heard them before! They roar it out. It’s a great song to sing live.
How do you unwind after each show?
Well, there’s no ritual, but we just end up watching telly and usually it’s at least two o’clock before we get to sleep. You’re just so hyped up after the gig and you’ve just come off stage and already there’s people saying, ‘OK, here’s your car back to the hotel.’ So it’s a bit of a downer if you like. But I sleep in ‘til 11 or 12 every morning.
What do you do with the rest of your day?
I just spend time with Gillian and Nicole, because they’re on tour with me. It’s great though, because I wake up and they’re there looking at me, laughing at me still sleeping. Nicole doesn’t know any different, so she thinks it’s great fun seeing her dad sleep in.
What’s been the highlight over the past six months?
I think it was definitely ‘You Raise Me Up’. That week with ‘You Raise Me Up’ at number one and the album selling like a quarter of a million in the first week in the UK, that was just unbelievable. We’ve just got to find another great song for next year.
hat have you got planned for when the tour finishes?
Most of June we’re going to spend at home with our families. Then July, we’ve got the outdoor shows, which are great. They’re much more family-orientated, a lot of families come for a day out. It’s always great to be on tour at that time. We’re hoping to record an album as well in July and August, so we’ll be very, very busy I think. We’ve got four or five great songs already. We’re really getting excited about it again, it seems like we’ve only just finished the last album.
Any message for your fans?
I want to say a big thank you for all your support over the last few months and coming along to the tour. It’s great, because we recognise faces who come every year. We look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Concert review - Evening News Arena Manchester
22 April 2006
Well first of all.. Me, my sister Katie and my dad and little brother got ready and went to
Manchester and got there at about 2:00 pm! We met up with my friends Steph and Laura off the official westlife message boards for the first time! My dad and little brother went off to walk around Manchester and
Me, Katie, Steph n Laura went to the hotel westlife where staying in! It was my first time ever doing this and i was so excited! We got to the hotel and found out it was the right one and that Mark had just left in a car and Steph and Laura saw him drive past!! Then we just stood waiting for a few hours! A few hours later, a car pulled up and some girls started shouting saying that it was Nicky!! And oh my god it was nicky, he got out of the car right next to us with
Dave and me, Katie, Steph and Laura were just in to much shock because we couldn't
believe we had actually saw him up close in real!! We took a few little pictures off our phones but we was all in too much shock to go up to him!! Later on, Steph and Laura went and me and
Katie went to look for my dad and then we went to Mcdonalds! Then we walked to the arena and i bought a westlife flag! Me and Katie then headed into the arena at about 7 and went to find our seats! We was really close!!! We was sat in block 115 at the side of the stage and had a good view of them all! We sat through all the support acts and waited for the lads to come one! Finally at about 9:00pm, Westlife came on!! The first song was flying without wings, my fave ever song!! Then it was hit you with the real thing and Katie recorded it on her phone!! We also waved our banner on that song which said 'Westlife Hit us with ya real thing'! The lads looked gorgeous as usual and the show was amazing!! The medley was even better especially Dont Cha, that was so funny and they sang it really good!! We tooks some pictures throughtout the show and just sang and danced along to all the songs, enjoying ourselves!! I also loved the bit where they did the fake strip and Shane did that flip, it was great! We had such a good laugh and we loved it!! The lads also mentioned that they got presented with an award for doing so many shows at the arena, go them!! When the show was over, me and
Katie went to buy some merchandise and we got all four of the lads signed pictures and a keyring! Then we went outside to meet my dad and while he drove us home, we talked about the show and how brill it was! It was one of the best nights ever, thanks you lads!!
